Oh man. Here we go. A fresh trailer was leaked for the amazing scraped Spider-Man game. It looks like we’re in for some special surprises.
EA has been moving away from licensed games for awhile now. Dropping the FIFA license in favor of EA Sports FC for example. As for it just being Disney’s fault, it doesn’t make sense. At least four other studios are producing Disney IP games. Bethesda is making an Indiana Jones game. Ubisoft is making Star Wars: Outlaws. Quantic is still making Star Wars: Eclipse. Skydance New Media’s Star Wars game is also still in the works. On top of that, EA is still producing Jedi 3 and a Star Wars strategy game at Respawn. Then there is all the leaked Sony stuff. Spider-Man 3, Venom: Lethal Protector, Wolverine and the X-Men games.
Disney has also been playing very nice with Sony for awhile now to keep Spider-Man in the MCU. If anyone is getting a deal for licensing outside of Epic, its going to be Sony.
My guess is that in classic EA fashion, it’s all money money money. And their studios have had flop after flop over the last decade. So risking a AAA budget on lets say, another Battlefront game, its just not worth the possible failure compared to a Battlefield game where they don’t have to pay any extra licensing fees.
Spider-Man: The Great Web was probably scrapped due to the team not wanting to splinter their studio to run a live service game. It would require an insane amount of resources to keep content flowing. A lot of that content would probably take away from the story of other titles unless they re-use villains all the time, which would cause its own issues over recycled content. It just doesn’t make sense with the route they’ve been taking with a connected story across multiple single-player experiences that are proven successes.
